"I had an overdraft in my bank account, it was like $400 over," Pine said. "I pulled over onto the side of the freeway and they said 'You're getting paid $65,000,'" he continued. Neither of the weekend’s top new releases — “Wish” and Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” — could keep up with Lionsgate's “Hunger Games” prequel. With an estimated budget of $200 million, “Napoleon” may still have a long road to reach profitability for Apple, which partnered with Sony to distribute “Napoleon” theatrically. “Wish," at least, is faring better than Disney’s Thanksgiving release last year: 2022's “Strange World" bombed with a five-day $18.9 million opening. Alexander Payne's film starring Paul Giamatti as a boarding school instructor made $3.8 million over the five-day weekend. Ticket sales overall reached $172 million in U.S. and Canada theaters over the five-day holiday weekend, according to Comscore.

CNN —More than 70 years after Disney had a cricket sing about wishing upon a star, “Wish” picks up that theme, in an animated movie that desperately wants to thaw out some of the studio’s “Frozen” magic. Hailing from members of that movie’s creative team, “Wish” doesn’t quite reach the stars, but it does shine intermittently while introducing another plucky teenage female heroine, gamely voiced by Ariana DeBose. The movie does however celebrate the power of wishes, and in the process, decades of Disney history. By that measure, “Wish” mostly delivers – a credible addition to Disney’s long filmography, even if it’s not exactly a dream come true. “Wish” will offer early-access screenings on November 18 and open wide in US theaters on November 22.

The event comes right after the Venice Film Festival, where actor Adam Driver slammed the streaming sites for their lack of flexibility over the demands of writers and actors guild. Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson are expected at the festival to promote their film "Daddio." With summer movie season at its midpoint, Hollywood typically begins to turn its gaze toward the fall, when a trio of major film festivals acts as the unofficial kickoff to Oscar season. That’s because SAG-AFTRA is prohibiting members from promoting any film while the strike is on, an across-the-board ban that includes interviews, photo calls and red-carpet duties. Without those appearances, festivals will be sapped of the star power that is invaluable to raising a film’s profile. The first event that will probably be affected is the Venice Film Festival, which begins its 80th edition on Aug. 30 with the premiere of the sexy tennis comedy “Challengers,” starring Zendaya. Venice has lately rivaled Cannes for glamour and headlines, so the loss of famous actors would be a big blow.

It’s amusing to think that a generation of movie watchers may be unaware that Hugh Grant was once a floppy-haired charmer. Playing a duplicitous failed actor in “Paddington 2,” a murder-minded politician in “A Very English Scandal,” a sleazy tabloid reporter in “The Gentlemen” and himself on the red carpet at the Oscars, Mr. Grant in maturity is proving to be one of the screen’s most entertaining miscreants. He is the most delightful element of some very good movies. He is also the best thing about “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”Mr. Grant’s gleeful villainy pumps (some) life into his scenes as a scheming usurper in the medieval-ish fantasy world of “D&D,” where monsters and wizards coexist with humans who seem far too unimpressed by the wonders around them. Leading the band of the nonchalant is Chris Pine as Edgin, who in a prologue establishes himself as a literal social-justice warrior (he rides around righting wrongs in defense of the downtrodden) who turns into a rascally thief after his wife gets murdered.

New York CNN Business —It looks like “Don’t Worry Darling” didn’t have that much to worry about. (Warner Bros., like CNN, is owned by Warner Bros. The solid box office was propelled by female viewers, who accounted for 66% of the film’s opening weekend totals, according to the studio. Ultimately, “Don’t Worry Darling” did what it was supposed to do, at least in terms of selling tickets. Now, those in Hollywood are wondering if “Don’t Worry Darling” will keep box office momentum going into its second weekend.
CNN —KiKi Layne may not appear much in “Don’t Worry Darling,” but the actress says the experience wasn’t a total bust. “They cut us from most of the movie, but we thriving in real life.”In addition to posting a video and a series of photos from onset of the film, she wrote, “Love you Ari” and included #GotMyCheck #GotMyMan #EverythingHappensforaReason. Layne plays Margaret and Statchel plays Ted in the film, which stirred buzz even before its recent box office-topping premiere weekend. CNN has reached out to a representative for Wilde for comment on Layne’s comments about her reduced role in the film. A source close to the project told CNN that Layne’s role was an important one to the film, adding that “movies are edited in service to the story all the time.”
Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry, Darling” is — on its immaculately, obsessively polished surface — a film about the danger of dreams. Even if you have somehow avoided all publicity for the film, the pop culture reference points should already be clear. Pugh conveys blissful serenity and anguished confusion with equal conviction; her deftness justifies Wilde’s poetic anti-narrative, and vice versa. The real world feels like ghostly and desaturated reflection. “Don’t Worry, Darling” is a movie that airily warns you to watch out for illusions even as it revels in a film’s power to create a world deliberately untethered from reality.
